Waiheke Island Coastal Interior Design Project

A private retreat shaped by relaxed coastal living and global inspiration, this Waiheke home was designed as a place of reconnection, to family, to landscape, and to a slower pace of life. Created for international clients returning regularly to Aotearoa, the brief called for a warm, welcoming interior that could support both everyday family living and generous gatherings of extended family and friends.

Island Interiors was engaged to develop an interior that felt timeless and personal, blending an international sensibility with a distinctly New Zealand spirit. The result is a home that feels quietly luxurious, deeply comfortable, and effortlessly connected to its setting.

Design Concept & Approach

At the heart of the design was the idea of quiet, relaxed beachside luxury. The interiors were conceived as a counterpoint to busy lives, calm, tactile, and intentionally understated. Rather than competing with the surrounding landscape, the design was shaped to soften and complement it, allowing the natural beauty beyond to remain the focal point.

Spaces were designed to feel intimate and grounded, while retaining the flexibility to open up for large-scale entertaining. Throughout the home, the emphasis was on ease: easy movement, easy hosting, and interiors that feel lived in rather than formal.

Architecture, Landscape & Flow

This Waiheke home’s architecture follows naturally with the contour of the land, stepping gently across multiple levels. We responded by ensuring each interior space had a clear purpose, while maintaining a strong sense of cohesion throughout the home.

Softening the architecture’s strong linear lines was a key consideration for us. We achieved this softening through layered furnishings, gentle forms, and carefully placed nooks.

Materials, Textures & Colour Palette

Materiality played a central role in defining the atmosphere of this Waiheke home. Inspired by a Caribbean hotel the clients loved, the palette draws on ocean blues and coastal tones, balanced with soft whites, natural linens, and tactile finishes.

The colour story subtly echoes the surrounding environment, turning up the blues of the sea while remaining anchored in neutral, earthy tones that reflect the island’s character.

Natural materials were essential to grounding the interiors in their Waiheke context. Wood, stone, wicker, and linen appear throughout, introducing warmth and texture while reinforcing a sense of calm.

Bespoke Pieces & Craftsmanship

Many of the most meaningful moments in this home come from pieces designed specifically for the way the family lives. The extended dining table and chairs, made in New Zealand by Woodwrights, were created to bring people together, generous enough for long lunches, celebrations, and the ebb and flow of family and friends coming and going.

Throughout the home, fabrics and finishes were carefully sourced and made bespoke in New Zealand, ensuring they not only look beautiful but wear well over time. An original coffee table by David Shaw anchors one of the living spaces, adding character and a quiet sense of individuality.

A Home Designed for Living & Gathering

At its heart, the Waiheke Retreat is a home designed to be returned to, a place that supports everyday living while opening effortlessly to moments of connection and celebration. Spaces flow easily between inside and out, adapting to quiet mornings, long lunches, and the arrival of family and friends from near and far.

If you’re planning a home that brings together lifestyle, location, and thoughtful interior design, we’d love to talk.
